Update - 07/04/14 4:37 p.m. - A Morrow County man lost his life in a late July 3rd fire in the 5000 block of Wirick Road (CR 1) near the county line.

Preliminary information indicates an occupant was trapped inside a burning structure. According to Johnsville Chief Harlan Barrick, the man’s identity was not confirmed, as the body was burned beyond recognition. A woman on scene identified herself as Alaina Carte and she stated that her father, Kevin Carte, resided there. The body will be sent to Franklin County for DNA identification.

Barrick stated that the emergency call first went to Knox County (probably due to cell tower) but was re-routed to Johnsville . Upon arrival, the structure was fully engulfed in flames. The structure had three connected sections; a garage, a mobile home and a pole barn. The pole barn was the actual structure where the man was residing and where his body was found.

The call reportedly came into 9-1-1 from a niece who lives next door. When she heard dogs barking, she went to investigate the reason.

Chief Barrick said this was the FIRST residential fatality for Johnsville. The only other fatality they had was in 1981 with the fireworks business explosion that killed three people.

The fire is believed to have started in the mobile home area and not the area where the body was found. Fredericktown Fire Dept. was first on scene. Fire units from Troy Twp., Johnsville, Mt. Gilead, and Fredericktown responded, as well as Morrow County EMS, the state fire marshall, and the Morrow County Sheriff’s Office. Coroner Matthew Hintz was called to the scene.

The fire is under investigation by the state fire marshall.
