The Mount Gilead Board of Education’s plan to go paperless caused confusion at their August 19, 2014 board meeting.

Though there were less glitches than the previous month, without a paper agenda for attendees to read, there was some confusion from the public in regards to specific agenda items.

The biggest item of confusion was the retire/rehire of Superintendent Jeff Thompson.

It was unclear to some in attendance that this issue was on the agenda and approved by the board ,until nearly the end of the meeting. Community members asked where the issue stood and that is when the board president Rhonda Graham stated that the board had approved the retire/rehire of Superintendent Jeff Thompson for another five years.

A member of the community asked the board what their thought process was on the rehire.

Board president Rhonda Graham stated, “I support Mr. Thompson. I think if you look at the changes that have been made over the past several years, technology has improved dramatically, we are moving in the right direction.”

The board reviewed with the crowd the resignations on the agenda including Carol Stevens, Intervention Specialist Teacher effective immediately and Jeff Thompson, Superintendent effective at the end of the day on July 30, 2015. The resignation letter from Mr. Thompson stated that his resignation was contingent upon the boards’ approval of re-employment effective August 1, 2015 per terms of the contract. The item immediately following the resignation was the board approval of the employment of Jeff Thompson, Superintendent, of Mount Gilead E.V. Schools.

The Mount Gilead Teachers Association Negotiated Agreement was removed from the agenda. The agreement could not be approved at the board meeting because there was a mistake on the agreement when it was received from the MGTA. Therefore, the board will need to schedule a special board meeting to approve the agreement.

The board approved the following employment for 2014-15 school year:

Maria Aivaliotis, First Grade Teacher, Kaylyn Armstrong,Intervention Specialist @ Tomorrow Center, Kortney Brinkman, Substitute Aide, Sondra Carey, Substitute Teacher, Melissa Chapin, Substitute Bus Driver, Benjamin Ditmars, Substitute Teacher, Nick Eddleblute, Math Teacher @ Tomorrow Center, Kortni Graham, Substitute Teacher, Cindy Hayes, Substitute Cafeteria, Margaret Hissong, Substitute Cafeteria, Jamie Kintz, Substitute Aide, Patricia Lily, Substitute Cafeteria, Tammy Sellers, Cafeteria (3.5 hours), Cindy Shoaf, Substitute Teacher, Shannon Smith, Part Time Early Childhood Teacher/Reading Specialist.

Supplementals, Lauren Rausch, Head Track Coach, Cindy Shoaf, IAT/RTI Coordinator, Amanda Vandyke, Middle School Cheerleading Coach, Sara Velie, Sophomore Class Advisor.

The board approved the following:

The resolution, as per emergency necessity, The Garland Company for roof repairs to the Tomorrow Center building at a cost not to exceed $5,000.00.

Susan Delaney as Treasurer of the Tomorrow Center from August 1, 2014 to July 31, 2015.

The second and final reading of the following bylaws and policies copies can be obtained from the board of education office.

Public comments included discussion on the early start of the school year which has not been popular with parents. Also the HVAC issues at Park Avenue with the classrooms being overheated. Trevor Gummere noted that the technician is working on the HVAC problem.
