Mount Gilead Councilman Tim Clapper sat in different seat Tuesday night, as he led the legislative body’s June 6 meeting in the absence of Mayor Mike Porter, who was on vacation.
In the abscence of the mayor, council’s presdent pro-tempore leads the proceedings, while still voting on codified matters.
Police Department
Mount Gilead Police Chief Brian Zerman expressed the department’s and community’s grief over the loss of K-9 officer Seger.
“It’s been a rough week or so around here,” Zerman explained.
Sgt. Tom Cronenwett made the decision to euthanize Seger last Tuesday after a learning the canine’s lymphoma had returned.
Zerman expressed thanks from the department for the community’s support during the K-9 officer’s final ride.
In a letter read by Mount Gilead Fiscal Officer Cathy Davis, Mayor Mike Porter also acknowledged village residents’ outpouring of support for Seger.
The department is currently looking to find a K-9 officer to fill the vacant position.
Additionally, the Mount Gilead Police Department has added a full-time police officer to its staff.
Dena Benroth began her service to the village yesterday after being sworn-in last week.
Mount Gilead Council approved her hire during the May 16 meeting, pending the results of her state police testing, which she has since passed.
Administrator’s report
Mount Gilead Village Administrator Dan Rogers stated the community pool at the ‘Rec Center’ is open after the street department’s extensive work on the facility this winter.
