Ohio Secretary of State Jon Husted announced 9,401 new entities filed to do business in Ohio during February 2016. This is 1,483 more businesses than filed during February 2015 when 7,918 entities were formed.

In February, Secretary Husted announced that 2016 was on track to be another record-setting year based on January’s business filings which were up 14.9 percent compared to filings in January 2015. The trend has continued into February and business filings in 2016 are up 16.8 percent with 2,602 more entities filing in 2016 than at the same point in 2015.

Though the most visible role of the Secretary of State is that of chief elections officer, the office is also the first stop for individuals or companies who want to file and start a business in Ohio. While recognizing these numbers can’t provide a complete picture of Ohio’s jobs climate, they are an important indicator of economic activity that Husted hopes will add to the ongoing discussion of how to improve the state’s overall climate for business.
