All appointments were canceled for the day at the Galion Community Hospital Orthopedics Center, 955 Hosford Road, after patients and employees evacuated when smoke filled the facility this afternoon.

Technicians were working on the furnace when some nearby cardboard was ignited causing smoke to enter the ventilation system that spread it throughout the building, said Lt. Jeff Pennington of the Galion Fire Department.

About 30 people including patients and staff evacuated the building, he said adding that the fire was put out before GFD arrived.

Staff at the center are working to air out the building.
