OHIOANS URGED TO ATTEND OSHIIP’S CHECK-UP DAY EVENTS – Ohio Lieutenant Governor Mary Taylor announced that the Ohio Senior Health Insurance Information Program (OSHIIP), a division of the Ohio Department of Insurance, will host Medicare Check-Up Day events throughout the state to help Ohioans understand their most suitable coverage options for 2016. Medicare’s annual open enrollment period runs from Oct. 15 through Dec. 7.

“Now is the time to evaluate Medicare coverage and determine what changes may have occurred in benefits and plans,” said Taylor, also director of the Ohio Department of Insurance. “OSHIIP will hold events in counties across the state to help Ohioans understand the different coverage choices available as they plan for the upcoming year.”

During Medicare’s annual open enrollment, Ohioans can to choose to select Original Medicare paired with a stand-alone Part D prescription drug plan and possibly a Medicare Supplement plan; or a Medicare Advantage Plan, which provides comprehensive health benefits including drug coverage; or determine if their existing coverage will meet their health insurance needs.

ASHLAND UNIVERSITY HISTORY PROFESSOR HAS BOOK PUBLISHED – Ashland University Professor of History Dr. Duncan Jamieson had his book, “The Self-Propelled Voyager: How the Cycle Revolutionized Travel,” published last month by Rowman & Littlefield Publishers.

“Before the last quarter of the 19th century, people who wanted to travel independently either walked or rode horses. Then a new invention changed the nature of personal transportation forever,” said Jamieson, who is a cycle aficionado. “The cycle — self-propelled bicycles, tricycles and tandems — allowed almost anyone to travel around town, around the region and around the world.”

Jamieson said that while dramatic developments in equipment, clothing, road surfaces and amenities make the physicality of cycling much different today than in the 19th century, the experience of cycling has seen little change.

“During the first few decades those who rode had few if any viable alternatives to the bicycle, or wheel as it was often called,” he said. “With the rise of the automobile in the 20th century, cyclists now rode out of choice rather than necessity.”

MEIJER SIMPLY GIVE FALL CAMPAIGN SUCCESSFUL – The Meijer Simply Give campaign held this fall generated more than $3 million for food pantries throughout the Midwest, making it the most successful campaign in the program’s history.

Meijer customers donated more than $809,000 during the fall Simply Give campaign that began in late July during the second annual Meijer LPGA Classic presented by Kraft. That commitment to supporting hungry families, combined with a donation from Meijer, raised the fall campaign total to more than $3 million, making it the most successful campaign since Simply Give began in November 2008.

“We cannot thank our customers, team members and food pantry partners enough for continuing to rise to the challenge and help us feed hungry families in the communities we serve,” Co-Chairman Hank Meijer said. “It’s inspiring to see this level of engagement.”
