UF LECTURE TO KICK OFF WILKIN EVENT SERIES – Marie A. Louden-Hanes, Ph.D. will be the first 2015-2016 Wilkin Event Series speaker on Sept. 22 in The University of Findlay’s Mazza Museum. Her lecture, “Revealing The Text: Winslow Homer and the Demi-Mode,” will begin at 4 p.m.
Dr. Louden-Hanes has been at the University since 1986. She earned her bachelor of fine arts, master of arts and Ph.D. from Bowling Green State University. She is currently a senior faculty member in the College of Liberal Arts and the 2015-2016 Richard E. Wilkin Faculty Chair.
For her dissertation in American culture studies she focused on the depictions of female sexuality in the work of American artist Winslow Homer (1836-1910). Her research found that even though Homer’s work seemed to follow the American ideals of the American 19th century urban woman, there were more complex issues related to female sexuality in his illustrations and paintings.
BLUE JUPITER TO PERFORM TWO FREE SHOWS – Blue Jupiter, a world-touring a cappella quartet, will give two free performances at The University of Findlay on Sept. 25, providing the community with multiple opportunities to enjoy their amazing all-vocal talents.
Blue Jupiter’s informal concert, as part of UF’s Music Bach’s Concert Series, will be held that day from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Alumni Memorial Union’s atrium. Individuals may pack a lunch or purchase one in The Cave and enjoy live music while munching. Oftentimes, individuals wish they could stay and listen longer during daytime Music Bach’s concerts. For this reason, Blue Jupiter has been gracious in accepting an invitation to stay and perform a formal concert that will take place at 8 p.m. in Old Main’s Ritz Auditorium on the second floor, which is accessible by elevator located on the building’s west side.
Hailing from New York City, its members include Broadway talent Diana Preisler, rhythm specialist Marty Gasper, “human orchestra” Jonathan Minkoff and rock lead tenor Jeff Washburn. The group describes itself as “an energetic blend of pop lead vocals, jazzy a cappella harmony and funky beatbox.” It has been described as “the real deal” by rock legend Gene Simmons, “incredible!” by Jane Pauley from NBC, and “nothing short of magic” by the Sands Casino’s entertainment department. Members initially gained national fame as the voices of Oreo Cookie, singing the national Oreo radio commercial since 2005.
Blue Jupiter has worked with Randy Jackson, Livingston Taylor and Oprah, and has appeared on VH1’s “Save the Music.” It has also headlined charity events for The American Cancer Society, The American Red Cross, Breaking the Cycle, Hartford Children’s Hospital and many others.
ASHLAND UNIVERSITY ALEXANDER HAMILTON SOCIETY TO HOLD OPEN HOUSE AND LECTURE – Ashland University Alexander Hamilton Society to Hold Open House and LectureThe Alexander Hamilton Society at Ashland University will host an Open House on Sept. 24 at 7 p.m. in the Ashbrook Center, located on the eighth floor of the Ashland University Library. The event is free and open to the public and food and drinks will be provided.
The open house will feature Dr. Chris Burkett, associate professor of political science at Ashland University, speaking on “Immigration and National Security: Lessons from the American Founding.” There will be a question-and-answer session following the speech.
Burkett joined Ashland University in 2005. He teaches American political thought and institutions courses, and his fields of expertise include the American founding, American foreign policy and political philosophy. Burkett serves as faculty advisor to Student Senate and is co-director of the Ashbrook Scholar Progam. He was named Outstanding Male Faculty Member of the Year in 2008. He received his Bachelor of Arts degree from Ashland University and both his M.A. and Ph.D. in politics from the University of Dallas.
