MOUNT GILEAD — Retired U.S. Air Force Colonel George Daniels thanked Centennial Chairman Donna Carver for her work organizing the celebration for the 100th anniversary of the dedication of the Victory Shaft.

Daniels lives in Florida and he heard about the celebration and the recognition with veterans banners from his friend, Don Bader. Bader encouraged him and his wife, Mary to come up for the celebration.

“It gave us a good reason to come up from Florida and we haven’t been up for a couple of years,” said Daniels after giving Carver a hug. He was especially appreciative of the recognition service at the First Baptist Church in Mount Gilead. It was attended by 300 veterans and their families.

Bader, said Daniels, was the person that got him interested in joining the service.

Daniels banner is at 116 W. High St. by the Dollar General/BP station. Bader is at 19 E. High St. Bader and Daniels are two of the 122 veterans banners lining downtown Mount Gilead streets.
