CARDINGTON — A Life Saving award was made to Cardington Police Lieutenant David Winkler prior to the regular meeting of Cardington Village Council Monday, Nov. 6.

Winkler’s nomination for the award was made by Delaware County Sheriff Deputy Joseph Elverson who commended Lt Winkler for his life saving response to a call in Cardington regarding an unresponsive person.

The subject is a brother of Deputy Elverson and he described the life saving measures Winkler performed to keep James L. Payne Jr. alive, including the performance of CPR until medics arrived. He was transported to Morrow County Hospital and later to Riverside Methodist Hospital, and is alive today following the installation of a defibrillator.

Elverson said doctors told him that in part, due to Lt. Winkler’s quick response in performing CPR while on the scene, Payne’s life was saved.
