MARENGO — Avanza Vaile and Dan West take pride in their menu that features meals and baked goods “made from scratch” at Marengo’s newest restaurant, Main Street Market & Deli.
West grew up in the Philadelphia area and served in the United States Navy several years before coming to Ohio. He worked as a cook in Gahanna for a time and met Avanza in Delaware, Ohio. She is from the Marengo area and that’s why they chose to open their restaurant here.
West said they have wanted to open a restaurant and deli for quite a while. Their idea is to serve recipes and meals that are classics with a special, new twist. One example is their toasted cheese sandwich with four cheeses. It is served on Italian bread with a creamy cheese and chive spread, provolone and Swiss cheese.
Customer Susan Grundy has been coming to the Main Street Market and Deli since it opened three months ago. Grundy ordered the Turkey Club sandwich Tuesday for lunch with the crispy, house potato chips that were still warm. Grundy raved about the quality and taste of all the sandwiches and salads on the menu.
Also on the daily menu are burgers made to order, as well as grilled chicken and chicken salad sandwiches. There is also a kids’ meal and many desserts. Fries are hand-cut and the house, side, and chef salads feature mixed greens and romaine lettuce, tomatoes and a variety of garnishes and dressings.
Homemade pies on the menu that day were: plum, blackberry and fruits in season. A three-layer cake, cookies, candy and other desserts are also tempting treats on display.
Dinners after 4 p.m. feature Chef Dan’s brisket and barbecue ribs. The brisket is a special recipe that takes almost two weeks to make. Vaile said you need to get there when it’s done because “the brisket goes really fast.”
Also in the deli are cheeses, deli meats, fresh vegetables, jams, jellies, breads and more. Hours are Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., Wednesday and Friday 10 a.m. to 9 p.m., and Sunday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. It is closed Monday. Phone number is 419-253-1300.
