Jordan Deskins, Cardington-Lincoln High School junior, was the guest speaker when Cardington Seniors met for their monthly luncheon June 23 at the Senior Center in Mount Gilead.

Deskins is one of 100 students nationwide selected to participate in a Marine Corps sponsored program, “Battles Won Academy.” Selection was based on athletic accomplishments, leadership, and community service.

An essay describing the overcoming of adversity was also a factor in the selection. Because she was one of the top ten selected, Deskins was the subject of a day long video taken during her school day where she was filmed during volleyball practice.

Active with the Community Food Pantry, the cameras followed her as she worked during the morning hours at the pantry site, First United Methodist Church. This video can be seen on the Marine Corps Facebook page.

Deskins and her mentor, Kirsten Ebert, a history teacher, will spend five days in Washington, D.C. in July. The will tour the city and attend other planned activities and hear motivational speakers.

Seniors president Shirley Robinson led devotions for this meeting.

The seniors will meet at noon Friday, July 28 at the Senior Center.

Reservations and cancelations must be made by noon on Thursday, July 27. Cookies will be provided by Barb Cowles and Linda Ruehrmund.
