Eighty four veterans and spouses were guests of Jenkins-Vaughan
Post 97 of the American Legion, Cardington on Veterans Day.
Contributing to the dinner, an annual event, was Chester Arbor
of the Gleaners Life Insurance Company. The chicken breast dinner was prepared by Susan Sands and served by her family.
Thirty “Valor Quilts for Veterans,” made by the Morrow County Quilters, were given away by drawings. One quilt was auctioned for $65. Helping with the quilt distribution were Kathy Prince, president of the Quilters, assisted by
Cheryl Jason.
Recognized for their increment years of American Legion membership were Leonard Benson, 67 years; Bob Gompf, 66 years and Ken Rush, 50 years.
A Post Everlasting ceremony was conducted for the following members of
Post 97 who passed away during the past year: Ernest Brovont, Franklin
Dennis, David Fee, Ronald Graham, Harvey Snith, Vincent Strine, Omar
Sutherland, and Vincent Strine.
Speaker Tom Simons, American Legion of Ohio’s Department Adjutant,
addressed the group and stressed the importance of veterans joining
veterans’ organizations.
Conducting the meeting was Jim Morris, Post 97 Second Vice Commander.
Jim Crawford, Post 97 commander, led the POW/MIA service. Introduced were Past National Commanders: Morris and Glen Hickman, Post 1.
Also introduced were Roy Terry, District 2 Vice Commander; Floyd Morris,
District Commander of the Sons of the American Legion from Squadron 97 Bart Arndt, Department Assistant Sergeant -At-Arms, Post 97; Roy Terry, District Second Vice Commander and Barb Arndt, District 6 Auxiliary
President.
Morris thanked Squadron 97 for placing the American flags on village
streets. Also recognized were veterans by their service group, the
US Army, US Navy, the US Marine Corps, US Air Force and the Coast
Guard.
