Morrow County Special Olympics team returns from state competition

July 23, 2014

Five new athletes to the Morrow County Special Olympics track team participated in the State games in Columbus over the weekend of June 27–29.

Logan Dillon, Josh Stuber, and Joe Herren from Mount Gilead joined Ryan Drury of Cardington and Olivia Sulser of Marengo to make up the Morrow County delegation. This was the 45th Annual Special Olympics Ohio State Summer Games held on the campus of The Ohio State University.

Special Olympics is a year-round training and competition program for children and adults with intellectual disabilities. More than 2,700 competitors from across the state converged on the Jesse Owens Stadium on Friday, June 27, for a colorful Opening Ceremonies.

Then on Saturday morning, events for the Morrow County athletes began. Dillon and Drury competed in the 50-meter dash, while Sulser and Herren squared off in the shot-put. Sulser turned in an excellent effort on the day as she finished with a gold medal in both the 100-meter dash with a time of 20.2, and the 200-meter dash with a time of 42.8. Dillon took a bronze in his 50-meter dash with a time of 22.4, while Drury finished with a silver medal with a time of 11.1. Over at the shot-put area Herren took his first of two gold medals with a throw of 6.54 meters. Stuber, in the same heat, took a bronze medal with a throw of 5.96 meters.

Continuing Morrow County’s efforts on Saturday morning, Stuber took fifth in the 100-meter dash with a time of 19.4, and Herren came away with a gold medal in the 50-meter dash turning in the time of 9.0. In the afternoon, Drury wowed his family and friends with a gold medal in the softball throw with a pitch of 15.35 meters. Dillon finished his day with a second medal receiving silver for his softball throw of 7.16 meters.

Morrow County was represented well by these young athletes, and can be very proud of their hard word in preparation for this great event. Out of a maximum of 10 medals possible, nine were won, including five gold medals.

The Morrow County Board of Developmental Disabilities is very proud of its Special Olympic Athletes and encourages anyone interested in participating or helping with Special Olympics to call Don Barchus, at 419-947-7045, extension #309.
