Morrow County’s Hazardous Household Waste (HHW) Collection Event will be held Saturday, April 26, 2014 from 9 am until 1 pm, rain or shine, at the Morrow County Fairgrounds.
Participants must enter using Gate C. The event accepts only household waste. Waste from businesses will not be accepted.
“The event properly disposes of many household items that can be hazardous to human health, animals, or the environment,” said Louann Holmes, Coordinator for the Morrow County Recycling Promotion and Litter Prevention Program that hosts the event.
Household hazardous waste collected at the event includes used motor oil and filters, paint thinners and strippers, household and car batteries, thermometers, thermostats, drain cleaners, pool chemicals, antifreeze, aerosol cans, fertilizer, pesticides, acids, ammunition (50 cal. or less), fluorescent bulbs and tubes, gasoline, etc. No paint will be collected at the event. A small donation of $5 per car or pick-up truck, or $10 per large truck or trailer is requested to help with the cost to dispose of the materials collected.
Residents can also dispose of televisions, monitors, computers and other electronics for a fee of $10 per television and $2 per monitor.
Scrap tires will also be collected for a small fee of $2 for tires less than 17 inches, $4 for truck tires, and $25 for semi, farm or tractor trailers.
“Take this opportunity to get rid of any these items collecting around your house or property in a safe and legal way,” encouraged Brian Benick, the Environmental Director for the Morrow County Health Department. “Many of us have things lying around that can actually cause harm to us or our neighbors.”
Benick explained that when household waste, electronics and other materials that contain hazardous chemicals break down they can leach chemicals or heavy metals into our homes, the soil or water. Old scrap tires provide an ideal breeding ground for mosquitos that spread disease. Benick explained that each year he has to enforce clean-ups of dozens of properties that have filled up with items like the ones collected at HHW, often at a much higher cost to those residents.
The Morrow County Sheriff’s Office and METRICH Enforcement Unit will be collecting unwanted pills as part of the DEA’s Drug Take Back initiative. Over-the-counter medications and prescriptions should be disposed of once they are no longer needed to prevent the accidental poisoning of children and the abuse of medications. Household hazardous waste and medications cannot be collected curbside with regular trash and should not be flushed down toilets.
Household Hazardous Waste Collection has been held in Morrow County since 1994. The DKMM (Delaware, Knox, Marion and Morrow) Solid Waste District sponsors the event to prevent otherwise recyclable and/or hazardous materials from ending up in the landfill. The next HHW collection event for the district will be held Saturday, May 17, 2014 at the Marion County Fairgrounds.
