A “Boot Camp” experience and “Lift-a-thon” open the winter season for Morrow County Community Center’s new Director, Eugene Ambler. Ambler has been the Personal Trainer at the Community Center in Mount Gilead for the past few months and he now combines that work with the position of Director.
Ambler and his wife Rachel moved to Mount Gilead from Columbus last fall. Ambler is an ACE Certified Personal Trainer and Group Fitness Instructor. He has been an avid fitness enthusiast all his life. He says he first became passionate about instructing others when he worked as a Snowboard Instructor in High School at Ravenna, Ohio. He started a part-time business providing personal training in Columbus and has instructed classes in Spinning, Spin & Core, TRX, Kickboxing and his self-designed ‘Gun Show.’
The Boot Camp group calls the new workout program “serious and intense.” They also say that Ambler works with them individually and while the program is a challenge, he doesn’t give them anything they can’t handle.
Becky Landis said that she talked with Ambler before the class began and said that she didn’t want to set herself up for failure. She has been pleased that he began at a level where everyone could participate and as a group they have worked their way up together.
“We’ve all gotten stronger. In week five we all did 100 push-ups. Not all in a row, but over the course of the hour combined with other activities,” Landis said.
Lisa Murray commented that it’s the group motivation that gets her to the classes. She said she wouldn’t do it on her own.
The group all agreed that if you would have asked them before class if they could do that many push-ups they would have said, ‘no.’ They alternate exercises and push-ups with circuit training, weights and bands to have a complete workout that strengthens and tones. Monday and Wednesday evening they are at the Activity Center at 50 South Main Street and Friday evening they are at the Community Center gym at 16 S. Main St. in Mount Gilead.
Ambler said there will be a new Boot Camp program beginning March 10th. The eight week program will be on Mon., Wed. and Fri. at 6:30 p.m. You can call the Community Center at 419-947-2100 for more information. There will be several new members in the group and several will be returning. Ambler said there are only a couple places left since there is a limit of 10 in the Boot Camp program.
Another new event that Ambler has organized is the Lift-a-thon. Weight lifting enthusiasts at the Community Center have been looking forward to the March 8th Lift-a-thon since the beginning of January. Members are getting friends and family to sponsor them for cents per pound of weight lifted. The funds raised from the event will go to the Community Center for power equipment and operation of the Community Center.
