Letter - being the master of our destiny

February 11, 2014

Dear Sir or Madam:

Being a Conservative, I really get irritated when I hear the ‘left’ call folks in the Tea Party or, in fact, anyone who doesn’t agree with them or adhere to their mantra, ‘Racist.’

If you look back in history you will find that the Republicans or Conservatives were always looking out for the African American community, as far back as Abe Lincoln, who basically started a war in his belief that no person should own another. It was the Democrats who supported slavery prior to and during the Civil War. Not until John Kennedy’s administration did they start to lean towards desegregation. One of the most stalwart Democrats, Sen. Richard Byrd, before he was a senator was a leader of his local chapter of the KKK. It was a Republican Congress, with the blessing of LBJ, who passed the Civil Rights Act, in 1963.

In some ways, the Obama Administration has taken us back to the Pre-Civil War days, when the folks on the plantation were beholding to the Master for everything they had and how well or badly they were treated, only now it is the Government who are the Masters, wanting to take control of every aspect of the folk’s lives, with entitlements.

Unfortunately there seem to be more and more folks who don’t seem to mind being enslaved if it means they don’t have to work or worry about where they will get their next meal, even if it means that they won’t be able to dream big dreams or even try to see those dreams become a reality. The Government is gradually taking away the pride and self reliance that, until a few years ago, was what made America the greatest country in the history of the world.

As for me, and I would hope many of my compatriots, we will fight to keep the Government from being our master and choose instead to be Masters of our own destiny.
