OTTAWA - A single-vehicle accident left one dead and a house trailer uninhabitable Thursday afternoon.
At 4:22 p.m. a 2006 Jeep, driven by Ronald Miehls Jr., 49, of Ottawa was travelling northbound on state Route 65 near Perry Street when he drifted off the right side of the roadway. After striking a traffic sign and a metal post, the vehicle then crashed into a house trailer at 1570 N. Perry St., Lot 1, causing the Jeep to burst into flames. Miehls was in the vehicle when it caught fire and was pronounced dead at the scene by the Putnam County Coroner. A husband and wife were inside the trailer during the crash and were able to escape unharmed.
No cause for the accident has yet been determined, but alcohol was not a factor and it was unclear if Miehls was wearing a seat belt. The Jeep was not traveling at a high speed during the accident. The trailer is currently uninhabitable and will need a complete renovation, but it is not a total loss.
Also at the scene were members of the Ottawa Police Department, Ottawa Fire Department, Putnam County EMA and the Putnam County Sheriff's Office. The Ohio State Highway Patrol, Lima Post, is in charge of the investigation.
